The story of Mandu Ladino spans generations and lives on in the memory of the backlands. Between 1712 and 1719, the Indigenous peoples of the Inner Backlands of Piauí led an important struggle of resistance, marked by the defense of their land, their culture and their way of life.

This memory is part of our people’s identity and inspires the work of Brigada Mandu Ladino, which strives to preserve and honor this history and carry its meaning into the present. By remembering the past, we reaffirm the importance of Indigenous culture in the formation of Piauí and the role of society in building a more aware, fair and caring future.

A story that is still present

Brigada Mandu Ladino was born in 2006 to preserve the memory of Mandu Ladino and promote culture. Since then, it has worked in education, community mobilization and the protection of cultural and environmental heritage, strengthening the bonds between history, land and society.

Preserving memory keeps the dialogue between history and the present alive.

In 2025, with the formalization of its Bylaws, the Brigade consolidated its institutional role and expanded its cultural and social work. This milestone opens a new chapter of commitment to memory, to the culture of the backlands and to future generations.
