Quite literally the largest and longest campaign in defense of Piauí’s nature. The environmental movement began in the second half of 2006 and continues to this day (19 years later — almost two decades!).
The movement
- National campaign for the creation of the Serra Vermelha National Park.
- Production of 10 physical posters circulated nationally at events.
- Participation in scientific, governmental and environmental events in Brazil and abroad, such as the United Nations Conference to Combat Desertification in 2007, in Argentina.
Achievements
- Preservation of 300,000 hectares of the Serra Vermelha, which were added to the Serra das Confusões National Park, expanding it from just over 500,000 hectares to more than 823,000 hectares — the largest federal reserve in the Caatinga biome.
- Transfer of R$ 150 million from the Federal Government budget to the State of Piauí (December 2010) as “compensation” for the “preservation” of the area.
This is the BIGGEST proof (factual, physical, real) that environmental preservation delivers results and generates incalculable returns!
Almost 20 years later, the condominium that allegedly grabbed the land is still there with grandiose and political projects, and the national park — which would have been Piauí’s fifth, raising its conservation status to a level capable of attracting investment from around the world — was never created.
